Uta Barth
Uta Barth was born in Berlin in 1950 now resides in Los Angeles
and works as a professor at the University of California. Her works in
photography are probably most well known and famous for being purposefully and
artistically out of focus.
It seems as if her photography is mainly focused on the
idea of perception as she makes unremarkable object appear in an extraordinary
ways. These objects are often everyday objects that have become so familiar to our eyes that
we no longer tend to take much notice of them. Uta Barth photographs these
objects in such a way that the object becomes the main focus of the photograph.
By photographing these object in this way, she is highlighting the beauties of
these objects that are often forgotten as being beautiful. A lot of these
images are of window frames for example the following image
Uta Barths obvious obsession with perception is apparent
as her photographs reflect a very particular lighting and composition. Her
unquie photographs also draw the view in to the spaces between settings and
leave the thoughts in limbo.
Some of her most famous works are often out of focus;
this technique is based on the ambiguity of the images produced. Ambiguity in
the actual photographs she produces is the most attractive feature in her works
as it causes viewers to question what they spend their time looking at and
reminding viewers of the beauty that can be found in most objects. This ambiguity
is often found in her works of out of focus photography. The following image is
one of my favorites
Her photography really astonished me, in an inspiring way.
These photographs appear to be so minimal and simplistic but they draw me in
and I've spent a lot of time just staring at these images.
